2009 Chinese Lecturers Tour Program

Professor Ma Yanhua from Beijing Normal University and Professor Wu Nianyang from Shanghai Normal University will talk about Teaching Chinese as a Second Language and children’s cognitive psychology in Irvine, Cerrito and South Coaset area.

Ma Yanhua, Ph.D. in Linguistics, Professor, Beijing Normal University
Prof. Ma has been working in the field of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language since 1988. She has taught all types of Chinese language skill courses for international students, as well as teaching graduate level Chinese Phonetics, Chinese Philology, and Modern Linguistics Theories, etc. Her publications include six volumes of TCSL course materials and more than forty papers in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics.

Teaching of Chinese Idioms
This lecture discusses some of the most used Chinese idioms in Chinese people’s everyday life, analyses the syntactic pattern when using Chinese idioms and the characteristics of Chinese idioms’ semantic evolution. Prof. Ma will also introduce her experience and thoughts on teaching Chinese idioms to non-native students.

BA in Psychology and MA in Child Psychology, Peking University,  Ph.D. in Linguistics, Shanghai Normal University
Research specializations: Child Psychology; Children’s Language Development; Psychological Statistics; Research and Development of Chinese Level Test; Psychology in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, etc.

Child Psychology in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language
Using lively multimedia tools, Prof. Wu introduces the characteristics of children’s attention, children’s different psychological traits and how to organizing Chinese classroom teaching according to children’s age and characters. This lecture also answers some frequently asked questions by Chinese teachers and parents. Some psychological measurement tools will also be provided to help teachers and parents to know their children.
